Yesterday, I visited the stunning National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum, both of which are located in the renovated Old Patent Office Building in downtown Washington, D.C. It was a remarkable visit to an exceptional museum only recently opened after six years of construction and renovation.
I know that many of my readers live in other states and other countries, but I wanted to quickly highlight this wonderful place and encourage you to visit should you ever happen to be in D.C.
As you know, this blog is dedicated to men’s style in all its forms. Being well rounded, articulate, thoughtful and curious about the world are most certainly traits of stylish men. And museums and galleries are some of the best places to learn about the world and expand your horizons.
I have visited many museums around the world and can say without hesitation that the National Portrait Gallery/American Art Museum is one of the finest. Exploring the soaring halls and intimate side galleries, I recalled the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay, two of my favorites. With its combination of sheer size and rich, uniquely American collections, this place easily stands among them. The assembled art, sculpture, furniture and stunning portraiture span the history of this country, reflecting its role in the world and many facets of our often conflicted culture.
If you ever have the opportunity to visit America’s capitol city please make sure to explore the many museums of the Smithsonian. Not only are they some of the finest in the world – covering virtually every branch of art, science, culture and history you can imagine – they are also free to all.
