One of the most fascinating crises facing the style-conscious shopper of today is a simple question, “Who am I.” What we wear when we step out the door in the morning is not necessarily indicative of who we are. Instead, I would say that for most people it is a clear sign of who they wish to be and how they want others to view them. For example, a new employee wears a suit to prove to his leaders that he has potential, just as a successful business man buys a more expensive suit to prove to others that he has “made it.”

Although this happens to be the case for most of the world, I believe it to be an unfortunate fact of life. It is unavoidable that we will be judged by most of the people we come into contact with based on what we are wearing. However, Ralph Lauren advocates a change in this mindset. Instead of judging people based on “who” they wear, instead look at people and notice what they wear and how they wear it. If Lauren and his various brands, polo, rugby, black and purple labels, have taught me anything it is how meaningless a symbol or brand can be. Instead, they place importance on how a man or woman chooses to dress themselves; what chances they take and how individual their outfit is.

Stepping into any Lauren store immediately inspires in me a sense of wonder at how many different ways there are to present oneself. Even the window displays present me with new and unique sartorial combinations that I never would have paired on my own.

To put this concept into perspective I’ll give a personal example. One day after browsing through the store I came across a navy Polo cable-knit cardigan. I immediately began to pair it in my head with various combinations of pants, shirts, shoes and even ties. To be honest, as a college student I couldn’t afford the piece that day. However, and much more importantly, it inspired me to race home and begin to pull out and try on other sweaters that I hadn’t worn in a while. It’s this kind of excitement and inspiration for creativity that Ralph Lauren has created for millions. My personal ‘style-horizons’ have been expanded by leaps and bounds by things that I’ve seen in his stores and catalogs, and that is something I’ll always carry with me.
